Shot #11 : Million views on Medium or LinkedIn
Using this strategy, Larry Kim got 1M views on Medium.
Hi there,
This shot is from Larry Kim’s interview (a renowned influencer on Twitter and LinkedIn) where he mentioned about a hack he used to get a million views on his medium post “Multitasking is killing your brain” and got more than 9K likes. Not only this, it also made him the 8th most popular author on Medium.
So, how did he do it?
He says that you need to catalyze an initial interest for your post. It could be through ads.
Sites like Hacker News, Medium, LinkedIn or Reddit work in the same way. Their algorithm promotes content that is popular at the moment.
Their content recommendation engine uses user engagement signals. If a lot of people are viewing it then probably the content is very interesting. This strong signal makes algorithm push the content in more user feeds, weekly emails and notifications.
He used Facebook ads to direct enormous amounts of traffic from different IP addresses to his post on Medium so that the platform thinks that the piece of content is super interesting.
Because he was not targeting his ideal customers, he chose to target worldwide audience to get the cheapest clicks. Giving a strong signal to the platform that the content is viewed by a large audience.
He also mentioned, ads can only give you an initial push. Your content should be good enough to get more people interested. This hack doesn’t guarantee success every time but he has managed to pull it off once in every 10 attempts. The same strategy can be used for LinkedIn as well.
Thanks,
