Shot #35: The "Tinder" Growth Hack
Using offline communities for growth!
Hi there,
Wish you a very happy new year!
Here’s your first shot of the year.
The “Tinder” Growth Hack
Tinder in its initial days used a hack which involved targeting the most preferred group of users who brought other users.
Tinder organised exclusive frat parties at different colleges in the US. The catch was, only those students who downloaded Tinder were allowed to attend the party.
This exclusivity attracted more users to download the app and start using it.
Tinder also targeted sorority girls (def: sorority is a social club for females, typically at a college or university, where the girls call each other "sisters," and do activities together) as its early adopters. They would go to sorority chapters, give a presentation and have all the girls install the app.
After that, they would go to the corresponding brother’s fraternity (social club for males) and make them open the app to see a platform filled with cute girls, which got them interested in using the app.
This started a chain reaction and soon the app became popular across the US.
