Shot #38: The Priming Effect

Why Priming Matters? because it affects consumer behaviour.

Hi there,

I couldn’t send out the shot last week. Really, sorry for that. We (ExperienceSaga) were very busy preparing for Valentine’s Day.

Now back to what you came for.

The Priming Effect

As defined by Psychology Today,

Priming is a phenomenon in which exposure to one stimulus influences how a person responds to a subsequent, related stimulus.

Why Priming Matters? because it affects consumer behaviour.

German & French wines were kept in the drinks section.

Each bottle clearly displayed their country’s national flag.

The position of the wines on the shelves was changed halfway through the two-week testing period.

French music and German music were played on alternate days from a tape deck kept on top of the wine shelf.

The results were astonishing when the experiment was concluded after 2 weeks-

  1. French wine outsold German wine when French music was played

  2. German wine outsold French wine when German music was played
