Canva needs no introduction but if you’re still living under the rock let me introduce it for you.

Canva is a free-to-use online graphic design tool that works in your browser. You can use it to create posters, social media posts, logos, presentations and more.

Here are some mind-boggling stats that influenced me to share this post with you :-

  • Canva receives 73.2 million monthly organic traffic

  • Organically ranks for more than 5.5 million keywords(Source: Buildd)

How did Canva do it?

To get those kinds of numbers, you need to a create process.

According to Foundation inc, here’s what Canva did-

  1. Templated their page creation based on User Search Query

They made scalable page creation templates. Canva followed a fairly basic framework that made it simple to create multiple pages. (See below)

Let me explain with an example. If I were to target the keyword “Wedding Invitation”, the page would have:-

H1 Title: Design, Make or Create Wedding InvitationText: Create Wedding Invitation with Canva’s Free Wedding Invitation Maker

And so on..

  1. Didn’t ask for backlinks, earned them

We all agree to the fact that backlinks are the Holy Grail of SEO.

Canva strategically created those backlinks with the help of an outreach team.

In order to find content that mentioned keywords like design tools, invitations, posters, digital marketing tools, Canva assembled a team of outreach professionals.

They searched the web and got in touch with the authors who had written posts on these topics.

See below an email sent in 2016 by their outreach specialist.

If you’ve read the email, you will not find a single instance where the outreach specialist has asked for a backlink.

The less it seems like a request for a backlink, the better. This is outreach at its finest!

Such outreach emails convert better than others because they’re worded in a style that doesn't make any demands.

Final Words..

You should pay a lot of attention to growing your organic search traffic. It’s more self-sustainable and valuable in the long run than the traffic you get from social media.
