Do you know about Convertkit’s growth story? I discovered it from a Twitter post shared by its founder- Nathan Berry.

Convertkit is an email marketing platform designed for professional bloggers, authors and marketers.

Convertkit grew to USD 1500 MRR and hit a plateau. Nathan did everything from content marketing to webinars and partnerships, but nothing worked.

That’s when he thought of doing Direct Sales and it worked.

Here’s what he did differently-

  1. Picked a niche

Earlier, Nathan was trying to target everyone who needed email marketing. Later, he realised that the money is in the niches. He narrowed down his target audience to attract only professional bloggers who needed/used email marketing.

  1. Engaged

He prepared a list of top bloggers in different categories. Subscribed to their newsletters and regularly interacted with their content on social media platforms. This helped him get their attention.

  1. Asked about pain points

After he had spent some time interacting with the bloggers’ content, he would email them directly asking the challenges they faced with their current marketing service provider. He never asked them to sign up for a demo or webinar (see email below)

  1. Did everything to onboard customers

When the responses poured in, Nathan got on calls and explained how his product could solve the problem. Bloggers liked ConvertKit but migrating to a new platform was a time consuming and tedious task. No one wanted to make the effort.

Nathan offered to do it for FREE and it changed everything.

The Result: Within 6 months, the fortune completely turned around for ConvertKit. It hit $15k MRR.
