Did you know that companies can start marketing to us even before we're born?

It might sound crazy but studies have shown that our preferences for certain brands and products can start to develop in the womb. I got to know about this while reading the book- Brandwashed: Tricks Companies Use to Manipulate Our Minds and Persuade Us to Buy

Music and smell are two powerful tools that marketers use to influence us even before we're born.Music can trigger memories in babies that can impact their adult tastes.

So, if a mother listens to certain music while she’s pregnant, the baby can become programmed to enjoy that music over others.

Similarly, smell is a crucial sense that babies use to communicate with the outside world. The smells that they are exposed to can shape their desires and preferences, even into adulthood.

The book mentions an example of this type of marketing. A shopping mall in Asia targeted pregnant women by sprinkling Johnson & Johnson's baby powder and spraying cherry scent in specific areas. The mall also played calming music, all in an effort to increase sales among pregnant women.

Within a year, the mall started receiving letters from mothers who noticed the impact on their newborns, creating a whole new wave of Asian buyers who were unconsciously attracted to the mall. It's important to understand that these marketing tactics work so well because our early memories and preferences stick with us for a long time.

When marketers target us at a young age, they can create lifelong customers. So, the next time you hear a catchy jingle or smell a familiar scent, remember that it might be the result of marketing tactics used even before you were born :D
