Shot #8 : The world's greatest salesman

What made him different from others

Hi there,Here's the story of the World's Greatest Salesman- Joe Girard (as recognised by Guinness World Records)He sold more retail big-ticket items than any other salesperson in recorded history. Some stats from his career ( 1963 and 1978) -sold over 13,000 cars at a Chevrolet dealership-on his best day, he sold 18 cars-in his best month, he sold 174No, he didn't crack any bulk deals. All the cars were sold at retail- one vehicle at a time. What's the secret to his success? He kept in touch with his customers/prospects even when they were not thinking of buying a car.To do this, he sent a personalized greeting card every month to his entire list (via postal mail as this was in pre-digital era). Every card had the season's greetings and inside it would say, “I like you.”(No discount offer or sales brochure) The card had his name and it was stamped with car dealership details where he worked. To get his card read, he would send the card in envelope of different shapes, sizes and colours so that it stands out. He did this month after month, in the anticipation that these people would eventually need a car. And when they did, who do you think would have popped first in their mind? There was a time, where customers had to set appointments in advance to come in and buy from him. Almost two-thirds of his sales were from repeat buyers. Takeaways?-Start building relationships instead of hard selling even when people are not ready to buy from you immediately-Find a way to stay on top of people's mind without being salesy
