💡 Primacy and Recency Effect
Ever wondered why some things you hear or see stick in your mind better than others? Most of the time it’s because of Primacy and Recency effect!
The Primacy Effect is the tendency to remember information better when it is presented first. This is because the first piece of information is given more attention and processing time and it is also more likely to be stored in long-term memory.
The Recency Effect is the tendency to remember information better when it is presented most recently. This is because the most recent piece of information is still fresh in your minds and it has not had time to be forgotten.
How can these effects be used in marketing?
Highlight Key Features First: When you’re first exposed to a product or service, you’re more likely to remember the first few things you learn about it. This is why marketers should highlight the key features early on in their marketing materials.
End With a CTA: The recency effect can also be used to encourage people to take action. If you want people to sign up for your email list, for example, you should include a call to action at the end of your marketing materials.
Repeat Your Message: The more often people see or hear your message, the more likely they are to remember it. This is why it is important to repeat your message via different marketing channels.
Here are some examples:
Video Ad: A car company launches a new ad campaign for their eco-friendly electric car. The commercial begins with stunning visuals of nature and the opening line, "Drive towards a greener future." It ends with a CTA to book a test drive and be part of the sustainable movement. The Primacy effect hooks viewers from the start while the Recency effect reinforces the desire to take action at the end.
Email Newsletter: A clothing brand sends out an email newsletter showcasing their latest collection. The email starts with an eye-catching image of their trendiest outfit and a headline that reads, "Be the Style Icon" The newsletter ends with a special limited time discount code for subscribers. The Primacy effect captures attention with the stylish image and the Recency effect motivates customers to make use of the discount code before it expires.
