Maha Kumbh Mela in India draws 500 million pilgrims. It is the largest human gathering on the planet. And in that crowd, around 5,000 people go missing every single day.
The problem runs deeper than just the numbers. Around 150 million Indians do not own a personal phone. Many pilgrims write emergency contact numbers on paper or on their hands, only for both to wash away during the holy dip. After that, there is no way back to family.
What Vi (Vodafone Idea) did
Vodafone Idea, working with Ogilvy Mumbai, found a solution hiding in plain sight.
Every pilgrim at Kumbh wears a Rudraksha or Tulsi bead bracelet. It is a mark of devotion. Once tied, it is never removed.
Vi engraved individual digits on each bead. Pilgrims could get the beads arranged to spell out any phone number they needed to remember. The bracelet itself became the contact card, one that could not be lost, soaked, or thrown away.
The bracelets were ethically sourced, waterproof, and distributed at major entry points across the gathering.

The result
According to contagious.com, 21% more lost pilgrims reunited with their families compared to previous Kumbh Melas.
Why this stands out
No app. No QR code. No screen required. The solution worked for elderly pilgrims and children equally.
Vi did not insert a telecom brand into a religious moment. They used something already sacred to solve a real problem quietly.
