We recently got a chance to interact with Aakash Mirchandani, Founder & COO- VillasOnRent to know more about this startup.

Team MV: How did you come up with this idea?

Akash: I came up with this idea by understanding my own behavior while booking a villa for myself from the other booking platforms. I felt cheated by the platforms when they would charge me hefty service fees just for the booking transaction and also as an owner of a villa in the outskirts of my city, I would find the commission charged by these booking platforms quite unreasonable to get me bookings.

Team MV: Who is your target audience and how do you reach them?

Akash: Our TG includes Luxury Travelers, Budget Travelers, Group Travelers, Family Travelers, aged between 18-32. We acquire most of our customers through Facebook and Instagram.

Team MV: What is your business model?

Akash: We are a free service to any customer looking for a villa stay. With owners we have a freemium model where listing their villa is free and they can opt for a paid premium service where we provide them with live statistics of their page, contact details of prospective renters interested in their villa and many other value added services. We also provide advertisement solutions for villa owners.

Team MV: How difficult was it for you to get started?

Akash: Coming from a business background it was extremely difficult for me to start off a business where the main asset is data and tech (website), but, I am determined to strive hard to fulfill other fellow travellers’ dreams with no additional costs.

Team MV: Who are the founders/key team members?

Akash: I founded this company with Manoj Sainani. Our core team includes Saagar Mengar & Kunal Gaonkar

Team MV: What’s your vision for the company?

Akash: Our vision is very simple- “make people travel more while spending less”

Team MV: We see Airbnb is your direct competitor so how do you differentiate your company from them?

Akash: Unlike Airbnb, we provide direct contact of the villa owners absolutely free to our customers which saves on the hefty service fees charged by platforms like Airbnb and others. Can’t believe it? Do a cost comparison prior to booking next time and you will realise that pocket friendly rates are possible when travellers and property owners deal directly.We also provide zero commission on enquiries turned into bookings for the owners which help them save up to 20% of their overall revenues.

Team MV: Have you been in a failed startup before? If Yes, what are your learnings from it?

Akash: Yes, I have. I started a sports apparel company. I realized it is very important to undergo a thorough research on the customers needs as well as the distribution channels.

Team MV: Any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?

Akash: Have persistence, keep working hard in what you believe, either you will fail and learn or you will become a success, but, eventually you will become a success.

Team MV: Any future plans related to your company that you would want to share?

Akash: Last 2 years have been very hard for us to get the product ready. We hope our hardwork pays off and we get favorable response from our target audience.
